Lovely insight! I am going through a similar situation (and coming from a similar background) - only 15 years older! It is tough and being on the floor although it gives me energy , when I finish my shift, my body and sometimes my soul, hurt!
WSG is good to get a better insight in specific regions and then there are 3 more specialised courses on Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux.
Nearly cried over your mention of the '50 d'Yquem. Happens to be my birth year, but the closest I've come to a bottle was decades ago in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where our B&B host, upon learning that we were wine geeks, proudly led us to the outdoor refrigerator (!) where he cellared his most precious bottles. There lay a 375 of '50 d'Yquem -- it turned out he and I were of the same vintage -- that he was saving for an unnamed future birthday. I wonder if he ever drank it; it seems increasingly unlikely that I ever will.
