If you like Sancerre, try these five wines
These are the whites I always recommend to Sancerre lovers.
Sancerre is one of those wines that people order often, and I have a couple of theories as to why. The first is taste. It’s light, elegant, minerally, a touch fruity but not so much that it gives off the perception of sweetness. The second theory, however, is the reason I think most people seek it out: it makes them sound like they know what they’re talking about.
What is Sancerre? If you’re unfamiliar with the wine, or you tend to order it without any idea what it actually is, then here’s a brief explainer: Sancerre is an appellation within the Loire Valley in France. It is well known for white wine made with Sauvignon Blanc. (Yes, Sancerre isn’t the grape, Sauvignon Blanc is!) There’s also some great Pinot Noir coming from this area, which make some bright, velvety reds and savory rosés. But people typically associate Sancerre with white wine.
Ordering a Sancerre sounds a lot more elegant and classy compared to asking for a Sauvignon Blanc. It gives off this feeling of sophistication and, dare I say it, belonging. Even if the guest has no idea what a Sancerre really is or where it comes from, at least they know they like it and they can order it with ease and confidence.
But what if there was more than one white wine you could rely on, wines you could also order with ease and confidence? White wines that sit in a familiar camp as the taste of a Sancerre, but also uniquely different?
If you want to expand your palate past the usual bottle of Sancerre, here are a few wines to look out for that I always recommend to guests.
